To help dispel myths that just aren’t true. I’ve worked in social media for the last 14 years, which is why I’ve summed up the most common social media myths and why you need to leave them where you found them.

1. “My audience is not on social media.”

FALSE! This couldn’t be further from the truth. 58.4% of the world uses social media – that’s 4.62 billion people. From baby boomers to Gen Z’s, social media is taking centre stage in everyone’s life, so don’t be fooled by the thought that they aren’t there. 

Everyone uses certain social media platforms for specific reasons. People mainly use social media to connect with family and friends or find a little entertainment to fill a gap in their day. People are more on social media than you think, with the average time spent being 2.45 hours daily

An excellent organic social media strategy can work for any brand, which is the beauty of social media.  It can be molded to support any campaign. 

Trust me. Your audience is there. All you need to do is be present, and then they will follow you. Think about it this way, if you never had a storefront, how could people visit your store? 

2. “You need to be on every platform.”

WRONG! You don’t have to be on every single social media platform. 

Don’t get me wrong. The more platforms you’re on, the more likely you will reach a larger audience, but if you feel like your brand is not fit to tweet or ready for the gram, don’t do it. Focus on a platform you’re confident with and have the time and energy to focus on. 

We’re only on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and TikTok. That’s because these are the only platform that makes sense for our brand and where our potential customers are. It’s as simple as that!

However, the average person switches between 7 social media platforms. And because people use different platforms for different reasons, you need to understand these uses to understand if your brand fits. 

3. “Social media marketing does not drive sales.”

B*ll*cks! Honestly, you won’t see results from organic social media instantly, but you can generate sales from social media other than just brand awareness and engagement.

You will see results from consistently posting on social media for at least 6 – 12 months. But let me lay some facts down for you…

  • GWI reports that 64% of brand discovery happens from social media networking, 28% from social media ads, 23% from comments on social media and 17% from social media updates.
  • Organic social media supports paid campaigns. It’s there as a reminder to let customers know you’re still around and ready to help them.
  • Organic social builds a community creates brand loyalty and maintains an online presence. 
Need I say more? Social media is a vital tool for marketing these days. You simply cannot thrive as a business if you’re not where your consumers are.
